Adventurous Activities - So you want to get more Adventurous with your Program


So what are the Adventurous Activities Pursuits?

Scouts Australia has recognised the following pursuits as Adventurous Activities and provides training programs in:
  1. Abseiling
  2. Canyoning
  3. Caving
  4. Climbing
  5. Challenge Ropes Course
  6. Bushwalking
  7. Alpine Skiing
  8. Cross Country Skiing
  9. Snow Shoeing
  10. Four Wheel Driving
  11. Cycling known in QBSI as On-Road Cycling
  12. Mountain Biking known in QBSI as Off-Road Cycling
  13. Canoeing
  14. Kayaking
  15. Power Boating
  16. Sailing
  17. Sea Kayaking
  18. Archery
  19. Fishing
  20. Pioneering
  21. Snorkelling
  22. Moving Water Paddling
  23. White Water Paddling and Rafting

So you are Leader and you have completed your Certificate of Proficiency:

  1. You can take a Section on a day walk in line with simple bushwalking definition as outlined in QBSI
  2. You can mentor a youth member in Outdoor Adventure Skills up to Stage 3 in the Core areas.

So you are a Leader and you have completed your Wood Badge:

  1. You can mentor a youth member in Outdoor Adventure Skills up to Stage 5 in the Core areas of Bushwalking, Bushcraft and Camping.

So you are a Leader with an Adventurous Activity Skill’s Appointment:

  1. As a Safe Participant Appointment holder, you are able to “demonstrate” skills and knowledge in your chosen pursuit.
  2. As a Trained Participant Appointment holder, you are able to “apply” skills and knowledge in your chosen pursuit.
  3. As a Assistant Guide Appointment holder you are able to “apply advanced” skills and knowledge in certain chosen pursuits.
  4. As a Safe Participant, Trained Participant or Assistant Guide Appointment holder in your pursuit you will have the skills and knowledge to assist youth members with Achievement Pathway elements relating to your pursuit
  5. As a Safe Participant, Trained Participant or Assistant Guide Appointment holder in your chosen pursuit you can assist with the delivery of pursuit related activities lead by a Guide.

Bushwalking Pursuit

  1. As a Safe Participant Appointment holder in the Bushwalking pursuits, you can lead a walk in a tracked bushwalking environment for any section in accordance with QBSI
  2. As a Trained Participant Appointment Holder in the Bushwalking pursuits, you can lead and supervise a walk for any section in a tracked and difficult tracked environment in accordance with QBSI.

Paddling Pursuit

  1. As a Trained Participant holder in the Paddling pursuits, you can lead an activity where 5 or less craft are involved in the Activity in accordance with QBSI.
  2. A Trained Participant Appointment Holder can be in control of a canoe or sail boat as outlined in QBSI.
  3. A Trained Participant Sailing Skill Holder is in control of a sailing boat that members are onboard of for an activity as outlined in QBSI.
  4. A Trained Participant Appointment Holder in Water Activity Pursuits can support an Adventurous Journey using Water Craft in line with QBSI. You will need a Guide to be involved in your Risk Assessment development and have them endorse your Risk Assessment before Activity Approval.

Vertical Pursuit

  1. As a Trained Participant Appointment holder in the Vertical pursuits, you can join other Vertical Pursuit Trained Participants in an activity which has been endorsed by a Guide in accordance with QBSI.

So you are a Leader with an Adventurous Activity Guide Appointment:

  1. As a Guide you have the skills and knowledge in your chosen pursuit to Lead an activity relating to your pursuit for members in line with QBSI.
  2. As a Guide you have the skills and knowledge in your chosen pursuit to Support a journey relating to your pursuit for members in line with QBSI
  3. As a Guide you have the skills and knowledge in your chosen pursuit to assist with the delivery of Adventurous Activities Training Programs as requested
  4. As a Guide you can endorse Risk Assessments developed for Activities in your pursuit area when members want to get Activity Approvals signed off.

Examples:

  1. As an Archery Guide you can run the range for an Archery Activity for members
  2. As an Abseiling Guide you can supervise an abseiling activity in line with your appointment

So how can I develop a Skill in an Outdoor Activity Pursuit Area?

  1. You can attend one of the Adventurous Activity Skill courses delivered by the Training Team listed in the Scouts Queensland online calendar.
  2. Upon successful completion of an AA program, you will receive an AA skills appointment.

  4. Skills held by a member can be found under the Skill Tab on the member's SMS Record.

What do I need to do to be an Adventurous Activities Guide?

  1. If you have completed your Scouts Australia Trained Participant Core and Assistant Guide Core Units Self-Paced program you are three quarters of the way there!
  2. Obtain a Trained Participant/Assistant Guide appointment in your chosen pursuit
  3. Apply to participate in a Guiding Adventure Program. Details on these can be found in the Scouts Queensland online calendar.
  4. After your course, you will be appointed a mentor who will support you in fulfilling the practical components of your guide appointment process.
  5. You will need to hold your Certificate of Appointment in your current role, current CPR, current First Aid as well as the above to meet the criteria for the Branch appointment as a Guide.

So how do I maintain my appointments?

  1. All Skills Appointment lasts for 3 years, except for an SP appointment which does not expire. 
  2. Every 3 years, to renew appointments skills currency is evidenced using 3 activity capture sheets and maintaining currency in CPR and First Aid.
