Electrical Work

Electrical Work

Introduction

Under section 18 of the Electrical Safety Act 2002 (the Act), electrical work includes:
"the manufacturing, constructing, installing, testing, maintaining, repairing, altering, removing, or replacing of electrical equipment".

This covers tasks like:
  1. installing a new power point
  2. replacing a light switch
  3. replacing a batten holder with a new light fitting
  4. repairing an electrical appliance like a heater
  5. altering the location of an existing power point
  6. replacing a light fitting with a ceiling fan
  7. constructing an extension lead
  8. replacing a plug on the end of an extension lead.

It’s not illegal to purchase electrical accessories or appliances that need to be hard -wired, but they must be connected by a licensed electrician;

Scouts Qld has consulted with the Electrical Safety Office (Qld) and the current insurance underwriters, to determine whether licensed
electrical workers, who do not hold a contractor’s
license, can conduct electrical work on behalf of Scouts Qld.

What is required

Formations of Scouts Qld will be required to engage a licensed electrical contractor for all electrical work that is to occur.

If the electrical contractor is going to provide the work at no cost, the formation will require a $0 invoice for the works as this is the method most
electrical contractors provide their certificate of
test for the works conducted.
This also provides evidence of the engagement between Scouts Qld and the electrical contractor and assures coverage of their safe systems of work and
insurance.
