Safety Alert - Suspended Tyre Swings

28 MARCH 2024

SUSPENDED TYRE SWINGS

Managing risk can be a challenge however, mitigating risk is now at the very core of all of our Scouting activities, whilst remaining adventurous and fun!

In 2023, a youth member suffered a back injury after falling during the use of a suspended tyre swing.

Any suspended tyre swing that requires other structures to be climbed in order to reach them, raises the risk of harm and falling from heights.

Risk assessments and C5’s must be carefully considered by those authorising the activity. Please seek specialist assistance if you are unsure if the materials are accurately reflective of the planned activity.

Qualified personnel must be in attendance to supervise pre, during and post use of activity equipment. Members may attempt to use the equipment without supervision.

It is incumbent upon all of us to identify and report hazards and maintain ongoing supervision of activities to ensure the safety of our members and guests.

Key Learnings:

  1. Suspended tyre swings must be setup at a standing height from the ground and participants must not be required to stand on something else to reach them

  1. Supervision of participants is not only required during the active use period – it must also include during setup and pack down of the equipment

  1. C5’s and Risk Assessments must be carefully reviewed by those authorising an activity.
