Pathways to Recognise AA Skills

Many of our members have existing AA skills which they would like recognised to support delivery of youth program.

To help swiftly get your request to those who can assist, and enable visibility and traceability to help with processing times, please select the appropriate pathway for acknowledgement of AA skills outlined below:
  1. Skills Recognition (for AA Skills Appointments)
  2. Request for SP/TP Skills Appointment from OAS stages
  3. Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)
  4. VET Unit Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or Credit Transfer (CT)

Skills Recognition for AA Skills Appointments
For members who have existing AA skills, but no previous Scouts appointment or formal qualifications. This option recognises that the member does not need to attend a Scouts training program to learn the skills.
  1. Review the Training Pathways and Training Program Outlines on the Hub to identify programs where you have existing skills.
  2. Confirm that you meet the pre-requisites for the program.
  3. In the Training Program Outline, identify the documents needed for Skills Recognition to evidence your existing skills.
  4. Complete ALL required skills recognition documentation.
  5. Email aa.pathways@scoutsqld.com.au with the following details:
    1. Subject: Skills Recognition
    2. Content: Request skills recognition for the relevant Training Program
    3. Attach: ALL required skills recognition documents.
  6. Your application will be shared with the relevant person to assess. They may contact you for more information or to have a conversation with you.
  7. You will be advised the outcome of your application.

Request for SP/TP Skills Appointment from OAS stages
For members participating in the Youth Program who have complete OAS stages which have been mapped to Scouts AA Skills Appointments in the Scouts Australia Youth Pathway Handbook.
  1. Review the Scouts Australia Youth Pathway Handbook available from the Key Resources page of the Scouts Australia website to identify if you have OAS stages which have been mapped to Scouts AA Skills Appointments.
  2. Email aa.pathways@scoutsqld.com.au with the following details:
    1. Subject: Skills Appointment
    2. Content: Request the relevant SP/TP Skills Appointment and list the OAS stages/pursuit that have been completed
    3. Attach: Evidence of OAS completion (eg. Screenshot of Terrain record) and your up to date logobook.
  3. You will be advised of the outcome of your request and any appointments will noted in the Skills tab of your SMS record.

Recognition of Current Competency (RCC)
For members who have previously trained but now have outdated scouting appointments (eg Bushwalking Level 2) or outdated VET units (eg SISOBWG302A). Credit assessment is required to determine the best pathway to currently recognised skills and appointments. Depending on your circumstances this may, for example, involve evidencing currency, addressing a particular skill gap, or re-training.
  1. Email aa.pathways@scoutsqld.com.au with the following details:
    1. Subject: Recognition of Current Competency
    2. Content: Advise us which Skills Appointment you are seeking  (Example Bushwalking Difficult Tracked TP). Advise us of previous courses/appointment details which may include Scout/Venturer leader training. Advise us of any previous VET units you held. 
    3. Attach: Evidence of currency. This will most likely be your logbook with at least 3 entries over the past 3 years in the relevant pursuit area in the relevant environment. (For example the track grade, water conditions, weather conditions), or it may include alternative evidence such as a professional resume and employer reference.
  2. Your application will be shared with a suitably qualified person to assess the evidence provided. They may contact you for more information or to have a conversation with you.
  3. You will be advised of the outcome of your request and any appointments will noted in the Skills tab of your SMS record.

VET Unit Recognition of Prior Learning or Credit Transfer
For members who have current VET units received outside of Scouting or wish to apply for VET Units. The Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT) is the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) you need to approach. All VET applications are handled by SAIT.
  1. Review the National Adventurous Activities Framework (NAAF) and the Scouts Australia website.
  2. Identity which VET units you already hold or you wish to apply for.
  3. If you have not previously had VET units recognised or issued by Scouts you will need to register with SAIT via the Scouts Australia website.
