RIDE ON MOWERS
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland Alert
Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) issued a safety alert following a fatal incident in which a person relocating a ride-on mower collided with a stationary trailer. This tragic event is a timely reminder of the serious risks associated with operating mobile plant. Ride-on mowers are commonly used in the maintenance of Scout facilities, and it is essential that their operation is carefully planned, supervised, and undertaken with appropriate safety controls in place.
Key Safety Learnings
Operating ride-on mowers can expose volunteers/workers to hazards such as rollovers, collisions with people, vehicles or other structures/objects, being thrown from the mower, mechanical failures, or uncontrolled movement. These risks increase in poor weather, uneven ground, or cluttered environment.
Plan and manage the task
Before using mobile plant volunteers/workers must think about safety first. This includes assessing the area, checking ground conditions and slopes, planning travel paths, and ensuring the equipment is suitable for the task. Risks should be eliminated where possible, or reduced using practical controls.
Use safe equipment and follow instructions
Only use ride-on mowers that are well maintained and fitted with appropriate safety features.. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and operate the mower at a safe speed for the conditions.
Only trained and competent adults should operate ride-on mowers. Operators should understand the specific mower they are using, complete pre-start checks, and know how to operate safely on slopes and uneven ground.
When operating a mower:
- Slow down when turning or braking
- Take extra care on slopes and uneven ground
- Avoid parking on steep slopes
- Always apply the park brake and shut down safely before dismounting
Good planning, competent operators, well-maintained equipment, and a strong safety culture help ensure routine maintenance activities do not result in serious injury.
Safety must always come before convenience when caring for Scout facilities.
